Of all the attributes leaders need, trustworthiness may be the most important. Followers will not commit to leaders they cannot trust. In a work situation, if there is no trust, the boss is just a boss, not a leader. When people do not trust their bosses they often find other jobs, and those who stay often do so grudgingly.

  1. They tell the truth as they understand it–they do not simply agree with two people with conflicting opinions just to keep the peace. Most lies eventually come to the surface, so trustworthy leaders stick to the truth and do not shade the facts to make themselves look better or to avoid difficult situations.
  2. They do what they promise. If a situation arises where leaders cannot follow through with their promises, they need to explain to their team members what has happened and what they plan to do about it. They must think carefully about how failing to keep a promise will affect certain people.
  3. They keep confidences to themselves. Trustworthy leaders know sharing confidential information is hurtful and unprofessional.
  4. They speak and act for the greater good. Sometimes this requires leaders to be tough to bring about changes they believe will benefit their organizations in the long run. In such cases, trustworthy leaders explain what they are doing and why.
  5. They are capable and get results. While the other four behaviors reflect aspects of leaders’ characters, the fifth reflects their competence to do their jobs. Leaders who are lacking in the skills and capabilities required for their jobs should put effort into building their capabilities through training or coaching. When it comes to results, leaders should be careful never to promise more than they are certain they can deliver.

  1. To follow a person, people need to have faith in her to believe that what they will be lead to do would be worth the time and work. To earn this faith, a leader must be trustworthy. She should not just instruct the followers what to do but also make them self-reliant and confident enough to take the right decision.

  2. Good article.It teaches us about the value of trust in our life.We can do anything if somebody trusts on us as we have the strength of various people who will support us.

    • I find the points a necessity and a great tool to work in a team with least friction. Would definitely apply the tools in my routines.

    • A leader should have all these qualities or characteristics which are discussed above. If you want yourself to be followed by others you should inculcate all these characteristics in you. A person or a group of person will only trust you when u keep your promises , do things which will not harm others. Then only you will be the leader for which people are looking for !

      • A very well written article.Brief, precise, and to the point. I hope to imbibe from these points whatever I might find missing during the situation of being a leader. But I do find the first point a bit contradictory, since what the leader thinks is true and ethical might not be the same for either of the two members in conflict, so this would just lead to a third opinion in conflict to the previous two, a case of ethical relativism. All the other points, I completely agree with and have a positive impact towards better leadership.

Not everyone can be a leader ,it require certain characteristics to be firm to his/her decision,have confidence to make others work n get work on time ,make promises what they actually can do …rather than making false promises …if all these qualities one recognise in someone …then they can trust on that person as leader .

  5. With no two opinions on it, TRUST is undoubtedly the most important ingredient for any dish of life to work out well. Trustworthiness supplies the required sense of assurance and comfort that one may need as a support while working. Also in right sense, a good leader is the one who without being biased decide on what has the possibility of being correct and apt for his members and work to come. A true leader will make and fulfill his promises with upmost honesty, transparency and commitment. A leader filled with trustworthiness will never follow any method or step that will lead his work and his members to an unstable state of presence and will try his best to do every bit of the task given with his members in consideration and with their due respect given. Hence I feel more clear on the idea that one must trust only the leader who is not unconscious and insecure of his position but is sure of his capabilities and potentials to deliver what in the long run is progressive for his work and members involved.

I couldn’t agree more with the fact that only a handful of people out of hundreds posses true leadership qualities, trust being one of them and so is the fact that whatever the results be for the team, a major portion is contribution of the leader. If it’s success, the credit goes to the team and if it’s a failure then everything is the leader’s fault. The leader is supposed to be responsible for the perfo

  10. Trust is an important factor when it comes to leadership because a trustworthy leader knows how to bring their team members together to work in a team. They are bold and very straightforward about things,that are right and wrong. They manage their team well and is firm while taking decisions. such leaders is capable of getting good results in the end.

The above para on trustworthiness introduces us to the real aspect of life it tells us that the base of trust should not be dependent on any factor of life one should be confident within themselves to fight the other hurdles which comes in their way. It is not true that we shouldn’t trust anyone but we must trust only those persons who are capable of leading a union for better future it is mostly in professional world where the people works in team and agrees to uphold the responsibility of one another. Trustworthy leaders also hold the rational and logical view for good changes on the other hand it is also true to say that if they are not capable enough to show better changes it is hurtful and unprofessional. At the end i would conclude that to trust someone in modern world one should be smart enough to look justified and logical.
