The first year in a new role should be spent doing a very good job at fulfilling the requirements of that role. After that time, individuals should start looking at their efforts more holistically in relation to the broader organization and how they can make a difference. Strategic direction becomes more integral to individual efforts.
At this point, creating a map that ties individual priorities and contributions to the organization’s strategic pillars is an important exercise. Individuals should partner with their managers to ensure their own priorities align with strategic direction.
Techniques for setting priorities include:
*Identifying the areas of one’s own job description that are most tied to the organization’s strategic direction and focusing on those.
*Analyzing and reducing the time it takes to do regular job tasks.
*Reordering tasks to facilitate a focus on the most strategic ones.
*Preparing for the unexpected and building flexibility into prioritization.
*Being ready for a bigger work load, but knowing how to say “no.”
*Reflecting on performance daily and making tweaks to the schedule if necessary.
